The NYPD works with media organizations on the local, national, and international levels, handling all media inquiries and providing accurate information in a timely manner. Experienced public information officers are available around the clock to assist reporters and other media representatives. All NYPD-related media inquiries must be directed to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information, which can be reached at 646-610-6700.

Types of Information the NYPD Cannot Release

Federal and state laws govern public access to government records. Exemptions and legal limitations permit denying access to records or portions thereof that, if released, would:

• Interfere with an investigation or judicial proceeding
• Deprive a person of a right to a fair trial or impartial adjudication
• Endanger the life or safety of any person
• Interfere with police operations
• Identify a confidential source or disclose confidential information relating to a criminal investigation
• Identify children under 18 years of age who are complainants or arrestees, except when arrested for a crime as a result of which they would be classified as a Juvenile Offender (Penal Law Sec. 10.00), sub 18)
• Reveal criminal investigative techniques or procedures, except routine techniques and procedures
• Release information about victims of a sex crime
• Constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy

In-House Press

The NYPD provides working space within police headquarters to local media organizations that regularly cover the NYPD beat. Many of the in-house press are seasoned reporters who have covered the NYPD for years. Providing them with a convenient location within the building allows reporters to develop close working relationships with members of the department.
