NEW YORK – In response to longtime Tibetan activist Lobsang Palden (Lobga Rangzen) act of self-immolation outside the United Nations, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs issued the following statement:
We are deeply saddened by the death of Tibetan activist Lobsang Palden (Lobga Rangzen), following his act of political protest outside the United Nations. Lobsang Palden spent his life committed to amplifying the voices of the Tibetan community and fighting for fundamental human rights, and his tragic loss will be felt profoundly throughout our city.
Moments like these remind us of the continued suffering that can accompany displacement, persecution, and the enduring struggle for identity, culture, and belonging.
New York City is home to generations of immigrants who have come here seeking safety and the opportunity to build better lives. Among them are members of our vibrant Tibetan community, who came to the United States seeking political asylum, freedom, dignity, and the opportunity to live fully without fear.
MOIA remains committed to ensuring that all immigrant New Yorkers, including our Tibetan neighbors, feel supported, empowered, protected, and connected to the resources and services they need. We stand with the communities navigating their grief and reaffirm our commitment to building a city where every New Yorker is heard, represented, and served with the dignity, compassion, and respect they deserve.
