NEW YORK – In response to yesterday's ICE shooting in Marble Hill, New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) Commissioner Faiza N. Ali issued the following statement:

"Seven shots. In broad daylight. On a residential street, as children were coming home from school. ICE agents opened fire on a New Yorker with his 5-year-old child in the backseat. This is outrageous. It is unacceptable. And it should never happen in our city.

"Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in their own neighborhood. No parent should fear that picking up their child from school could end with that child witnessing their parent being shot. No family should have to live with the fear that going to work, walking down the street or simply going about their lives could mean being detained, separated or harmed by the very agents who claim to keep us safe.

"But that is the reality ICE is imposing on our communities. And yesterday's shooting makes clear what immigrant New Yorkers have known for a long time: ICE does not make our city safer. It makes our neighbors less safe. Its tactics sow fear, tear families apart and put lives at risk. There is no place for this kind of violence in our communities.

"We demand accountability for this shooting. And we demand an end to ICE enforcement in New York City.

"The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs will continue to stand with immigrant New Yorkers, providing trusted information, Know Your Rights resources and connections to legal support. If you or someone you know needs assistance, call our free, confidential Immigration Legal Support Hotline at 1-800-354-0365.

"To our immigrant neighbors: You belong here. This is your home. You are part of what makes New York City the city it is. Your safety matters. Your dignity matters. Your future matters.

"We will use every tool at our disposal to protect our neighbors, defend our communities and build a city where every New Yorker — no matter where they were born or what their immigration status may be — can live without fear."
