June 10, 2025, NYC Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice (MOERJ) Commissioner Sideya Sherman joined the NYC Commission on Racial Equity (CORE) and the NYC Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) to host the first “Citywide Gathering on Reparations”, a community event bringing New Yorkers together to share stories, ideas, and visions for a more just future. January 31, 2025, NYC Chief Equity Officer and NYC Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice Commissioner Sideya Sherman recently joined our partners at NYC Public Schools and NYC Kids Rise to celebrate a major milestone! Over 282,000 public school students now have Save for College accounts, with more than $42 million invested toward their future college and career education.


November 20 2024, The city hosted members of the indigenous community at Gracie Mansion to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Lenape people in New York City. The event brought diverse voices together and highlighted the importance of honoring indigenous history and contributions.


October 24 2024, The NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice (MOERJ) partnered with the NYU McSilver Institute for a powerful discussion with state and city electeds, practitioners, advocates, and researchers to address the current state of Black maternal health in New York. This important conversation explored existing legislation and identified key areas of need, while also highlighting upcoming legislative priorities.


September 2024, At the "Empowering Women for the C-Suite to Hollywood" luncheon, NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice (MOERJ) Commissioner Sideya Sherman joined leaders from MOME, DCLA, and iWomanTV to discuss pay, gender, and racial equity. Cannabis NYC Listening & Learning Tour stop in Staten Island. Hosted by SBS, this resource fair and growers showcase educated, engaged, and empowered New Yorkers to get involved with the legal cannabis industry.
On Thursday, August 10, 2023, participants from the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development's SYEP program were able to experience LGBTQ+ history at the Stonewall Inn. In a heartfelt meet and greet, the owners talked about the Stonewall uprising's significance, focusing on its pivotal role in sparking the LGBTQ+ liberation movement. Through this collaboration with the NYC Unity Project, attendees didn't just learn about LGBTQ+ rights – they connected deeply with the ongoing struggle for equality. Events like this bridge the gap between the past and present, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive future.
On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the Unity Project and its Acting Executive Director Ronald Porcelli invited SYEP participants to venture through some of NYC's most pivotal LGBTQ landmarks. Guided by Ken Lustbader of the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project, the tour began at Christopher Park, opposite the famed Stonewall Inn. From revisiting the 1966 "Sip-In" at Julius' Bar to the birthplace of the 1970 NYC Pride March, attendees explored key sites that shaped our LGBTQ history. A powerful reminder of the foundations of Pride and the importance of preserving these stories for the next generation.
On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, members of NYC Department of Youth & Community Development's SYEP program learned more about LGBTQ+ history at the Alice Austen House (AAH). In collaboration with the American LGBTQ+ Museum, attendees were introduced to the 'Queer Ecologies Garden' project—a beautiful mix of AAH's heritage and the New York Restoration Project's commitment to inclusion. The day created excitement for the future of the American LGBTQ+ Museum, set to open its doors in 2026. The tour ended with participants using their creativity for a cyanotype art project, like the style of iconic American photographer, Alice Austen. Through events like this, we remember the past and look forward with hope.
On Monday August 7, 2023, the NYC Mayor's Office of Equity, NYC Unity Project, and the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development partnered with Disney for the "SYEP Pride Event with Disney." This gathering served as a festive part of the ongoing celebration of the 60th year anniversary of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and its continuous efforts to support NYC youth, with a new focus on the LGBTQ+ community through strategic Pride initiatives. The 'SYEP Pride Event with Disney' panel featured an opening keynote from NYC Mayor's Office of Equity Commissioner Sideya Sherman where she delivered remarks, underscoring the city's commitment to such impactful programs like SYEP in paving a brighter future for the next generation of New Yorkers. The event was expertly moderated by NYC Unity Project acting director Ronald Porcelli and Disney Theatrical Group Engagement Coordinator Kiara Brown-Clark. Thursday, June 23, 2023, Commissioner Sideya Sherman, NYC Mayor's Office of Equity, delivered remarks about the importance of uplifting and celebrating Juneteenth. Sunday, October 9, at the 2022 Ballroom Hall of Fame Awards held at Amazura , Commissioner Sideya Sherman and Ronald Porcelli, NYC Unity Project Senior Policy Advisor, presented a Mayoral honor to Ballroom Legend Jack Mizarhi Gorgeous Gucci, of the House of Gorgeous Gucci in recognition of the NYC Ballroom Community and the exceptional contributions made by the ballroom community.
Friday, September 9, Commissioner Sideya Sherman and MOE Staff volunteered with Green City Force (GCF), a non-profit organization that engages with young, NYCHA-housed, adults between the ages of 18-24 encouraging community impact, and career pathway training related to the green economy. Together, MOE staff painted asphalt, weeded and aerated the beds in preparations for GCF's next crops.

The Ali Forney Center is a renowned non-profit serving LGBTQ+ runaway and homeless youth, and the Bea Arthur Residence is a transitional living program designed to prepare homeless LGBTQ+ youth for successfully living alone.

Friday, June 17 at 10am Mayor Eric Adams, the Mayor's Office of Equity, the NYC Unity Project and the New York City Department of Youth & Community Development, announced an investment of nearly $6.7 million to provide new and expanded services for the LGBTQ+ community. Pride is a time for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers to celebrate who they are, their hard-won victories, and their extraordinary resilience and brilliance. During Pride and every other month, New York City remains committed to ensuring LGBTQ+ New Yorkers are safe, healthy, and supported while fulfilling its historic legacy. These new services provide wide-ranging support that include first-of-its-kind funding for capacity building of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC)/non-binary (NB)-led nonprofits, legal services, and support for homeless youth.
