NYC Department of Correction Notification of a Death

Statement from NYC Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie:

“A man in the Department’s custody tragically passed away after being transported to the hospital. The care of everyone who resides in our facilities is our highest priority, and we mourn his loss. Our deepest sympathies go out to his loved ones. The incident will be thoroughly investigated.”

Background from the NYC Department of Correction:

At 12:05 a.m., at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center, an Officer discovered Edwin Ramos, 38, in medical distress inside a bathroom. An emergency was activated, and the Officer provided aid while medical personnel responded. The individual was brought to the clinic by 12:24 a.m. before Emergency Medical Services transported him to a nearby hospital.

The Department has notified the federal monitor; the Board of Correction; the State Attorney General’s Office; the City Department of Investigation; the State Commission of Correction; the Office of Chief Medical Examiner; and the district attorneys.
