NYC Department of Correction Notification of a Death



Statement from NYC Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie:

"The Department is mourning the tragic death of an individual in our custody. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family. The safety of everyone in our care is always our foremost concern, and we will fully investigate this tragedy.”

Background from the NYC Department of Correction:

At approximately 2:00 a.m. at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center, an Officer observed Mr. Aramis Furse in his cell appearing unwell. The Officer activated a medical emergency. Medical staff, followed by EMS, arrived to provide aid. Mr. Furse was transported to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 3:15 a.m.

The Department has notified the Federal Monitor, the Board of Correction, the State Attorney General’s Office, the City Department of Investigation, the State Commission of Correction, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and the District Attorneys.

Mr. Furse, age 32, self-identified as African-American.
