				Crane Collapse in
				Midtown Manhattan

						| | On the
						morning of July 26th,

DOB engineers and inspectors joined a multi-agency
emergency response after a fire broke out on the
machine deck of a tower crane 550 feet up in the air in
Midtown Manhattan, which led to a major collapse of the
crane's boom. Miraculously, no one was killed or
seriously hurt in this major incident.

DOB crane inspectors have climbed to the fire-damaged
machine deck on multiple occasions since the
collapse, and have found the tower crane to be in stable
conditions. DOB investigators have not found any
evidence that the crane still poses a danger to public
safety. In response to the major collapse, DOB launched
a comprehensive investigation to find out exactly why
the collapse occurred, and whether the incident could
						have potentially been prevented.
DOB would like to thank all the men and women from our
agency partners that were involved in the emergency
						response. | |
